The place
About Cedar Point Campground
Croatan is an unusual national forest — pocosin, longleaf pine savanna, carnivorous plants and salt marsh rather than mountains — and Cedar Point sits at its coastal edge where the White Oak River opens into Bogue Sound. The Tideland Trail loops out over the marsh on boardwalk, and the views across the water at dusk, with wading birds working the shallows, are the best thing about staying here. Sites are among loblolly pine near the water. The Crystal Coast beaches and Emerald Isle are a short drive, which makes this a quieter alternative to camping on the strip itself.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Access from NC 58 is paved and the campground road is easy, making this one of the simpler coastal forest campgrounds to get into. Cape Carteret is barely a mile away for fuel and groceries. Two things to plan for: the marsh produces mosquitoes and biting midges in quantity from late spring onward, and summer humidity here is heavy, so ventilation and screens matter more than shade. Cell signal is generally fine.
