About Frisco Campground

Frisco is the most interesting of the Hatteras campgrounds because it is built into the dunes rather than flattened out behind them, so sites sit at different heights among sea oats and low maritime scrub with the ocean audible from all of them and visible from some. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, is a short drive up the road, and Cape Point beyond it is famous for both fishing and the fact that two currents meet just offshore. This part of Hatteras Island is narrow, quiet and much less developed than the northern beaches.

For van drivers

Getting a van in and out

Off NC 12 on paved road, with an internal campground road through the dunes that is sandy in places and has some grade and tight turns — fine for most builds, worth scouting for a long one. The Outer Banks caveats all apply: relentless wind, blowing sand, salt, no shade, and a single road on and off the island that overwashes in storms. Avon and Hatteras village cover groceries and fuel. Watch the tropical forecast in late summer.

Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
