About Dreher Island State Park
Dreher Island is an unusual piece of geography for a state park: three islands in the middle of Lake Murray, linked to each other and the mainland by causeways and bridges, which means water is visible from almost everywhere in the park and many campsites sit close to the shore. Lake Murray is a big, open reservoir west of Columbia, popular for boating and known for its striped bass. The park's trails are short and easy, winding through pine and hardwood along the shoreline. In summer the purple martins roosting on the lake gather in enormous numbers at dusk, one of the more remarkable wildlife spectacles in the Midlands.

Getting a van in and out
Paved access and a developed campground with drive-in, waterside sites. Getting there involves a stretch of narrow rural roads and then the causeways, all paved and fine, but the final approach has some tight turns. Chapin and Little Mountain are close for basics, and Columbia is around forty minutes. Boat trailer traffic is heavy on summer weekends. Cell signal is generally good.
