About Edisto Beach State Park
Edisto Island has stayed deliberately out of step with the rest of the coast — no high-rises, one road on and off, and a pace that has not changed much in decades. The park holds beachfront known for its shelling, and one of the largest remaining maritime forests in the state just behind it, where live oaks and palmettos grow to real size over a floor of saw palmetto. A trail runs from the beach back through the forest to a Native American shell mound on the marsh, and the park sits at the seaward edge of the ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the Atlantic coast. Sunrise over the water and dolphins working the surf line are routine.

Getting a van in and out
Paved access on SC 174, the only road onto the island, and a developed campground with both oceanfront and forest-side drive-in sites — the forest loop gives shade, the beach loop gives the view and the wind. Edisto Beach town covers basics; Charleston is about an hour and is the realistic stop for anything substantial. Plan resupply accordingly, because the island is quiet by design. Marsh mosquitoes are serious at dusk, and the single access road matters in hurricane season.
