About Huntington Beach State Park
Huntington Beach combines three miles of beach with an unusually productive set of habitats behind it — salt marsh, freshwater lagoon, maritime forest and tidal creek — and that variety is why birders consistently rank it the finest site on the state's coast, with a species list well into the hundreds and alligators in the freshwater causeway pools. Atalaya, the winter home Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington built in the 1930s, sits among the dunes: a low brick and stucco courtyard house in Moorish style, deliberately unadorned, open to walk through. Brookgreen Gardens, the sculpture garden the Huntingtons founded, is directly across the highway.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Paved access straight off US 17 and a developed campground with drive-in sites, some in the open and some with tree cover. Murrells Inlet and Myrtle Beach are close for full supplies. The causeway is the birding hotspot and also where the alligators are, so keep dogs well back. Being a popular coastal park close to Myrtle Beach, it books up in season. Marsh insects are active at dawn and dusk.
