The place
About Myrtle Beach State Park
This was South Carolina's first state park, opened in the 1930s, and its real achievement is existing at all: a mile of undeveloped oceanfront and a stand of old maritime forest surrounded by the most heavily built coastline in the state. Step off the beach into the woods and there are loblolly pines and live oaks two centuries old with a proper understory, which is the last thing you expect in Myrtle Beach. The fishing pier runs out over the surf, the CCC-era buildings are still in service, and the campground sits back under the trees. It is a strange and welcome pocket of calm.

Getting a van in and out
Paved access directly off US 17 Business with a developed campground and drive-in sites under real tree cover — shade, which almost no other Grand Strand option offers. Everything is within minutes, since you are inside a resort city: groceries, fuel, laundry, repairs. The flip side is traffic, which in summer along US 17 is heavy and slow, and a campground that books far in advance for peak weeks. Cell signal is full strength.
