About Morrow Mountain State Park
Morrow Mountain protects a cluster of the higher Uwharrie summits where the Yadkin becomes the Pee Dee and Lake Tillery backs up behind the dam. A paved road climbs to a picnic area near the top of Morrow Mountain with views over the water and the surrounding hills — a genuine mountain view a long way east of the mountains. The rock here was quarried by Native Americans for stone tools over thousands of years, and the park interprets that history. There is swimming, boating on Lake Tillery, and a long network of hiking and bridle trails through forest that feels older than it looks.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Fully paved access from Albemarle and a developed campground with drive-in sites, so this is an easy one. The summit road is a steady climb with curves but nothing technical. Albemarle is ten minutes out for groceries, fuel and laundry, and Charlotte is about an hour, making this a practical first or last night on a Piedmont route.
