The place
About Santee State Park
Lake Marion was created in the 1940s by damming the Santee River, and much of the drowned forest was never cleared, so the upper lake is still a maze of standing cypress and open water that makes for exceptional fishing and strange, memorable paddling. Santee State Park sits on the northern shore with its unusual cabins built out over the water on piers. Behind the shoreline, a limestone bluff holds a set of sinkholes and a small cave system — an odd geological pocket in an otherwise flat landscape — reached by the park's nature trails. Birding on the lake is excellent, and in winter the waterfowl numbers climb.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Paved access from SC 6, minutes off I-95, with developed drive-in campground loops — one of the easiest and most practical overnights on the whole I-95 corridor. Santee town is immediately outside for fuel and groceries. It is a hot, humid, low-lying place in summer with mosquitoes to match after sundown, so ventilation and screens earn their keep. Cell signal is good.
Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
