About Linville Falls Campground
The campground sits in hemlock and rhododendron where the Linville River is still gentle, a few hundred yards upstream of the point where it drops into the gorge and stops being gentle at all. A short network of trails leads to a series of overlooks on the falls, each one lower and louder than the last. Below that, Linville Gorge itself is rugged, popular with climbers and serious hikers, and a genuinely committing place to walk into. The campground is quiet, wooded and cool, and the sound of the river carries through it all night.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Reached from the Parkway, with the usual consequences: a 45 mph limit, curves, and tunnels to the south with posted clearances that a high-roof build needs to respect. US 221 and the town of Linville are nearby for supplies. Expect the Parkway approach to close during winter ice; the gorge traps fog in the mornings well into spring.
Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
