About Doughton Park Campground
Doughton Park is one of the largest recreation areas on the Parkway and one of the least crowded, a broad shoulder of highland meadow and exposed bluff that feels more like open country than forest. The Bluffs look out over the Basin Cove watershed, and a substantial trail system drops steeply off the escarpment into it, passing the Brinegar Cabin and the remains of a mountain homestead community on the way. Because this section sits well north of Asheville and away from the busier overlooks, evenings here are genuinely dark and quiet.

Getting a van in and out
The northern Parkway is generally gentler driving than the stretches around Asheville, with fewer tunnels, but it is still a slow ridge road with no fuel. Sparta is the nearest town for gas and groceries. The meadows mean real exposure: wind moves across this campground in a way it does not in the sheltered wooded sites further south, which is welcome in August and less so in October.
