The place
About Stone Mountain State Park
The dome is the thing: a bare granite whaleback rising straight out of forest, visible from the meadow below and climbable by a loop trail that goes up the back and returns along the base of the cliff. Serious rock climbers work the south face. Below it, the park protects miles of designated trout water, and the Hutchinson Homestead sits in the meadow with its cabin, barn and blacksmith shop kept as they were. Stone Mountain Falls comes down a long sloping rock face on a staircase of several hundred steps. It is a bigger and more varied park than its size suggests.

Getting a van in and out
Access from US 21 is ordinary paved road and the park's internal roads are well maintained, making this one of the more relaxed mountain-edge parks to reach. The campground is a developed state park loop. Sparta and Elkin are the nearest towns for fuel and groceries. Cell coverage is workable near the park office and thin in the lower trail areas.
