About Mount Pisgah Campground
At roughly 5,000 feet, this is as high as you can sleep on the Parkway in North Carolina, and the altitude changes everything. Nights are cold enough for a blanket in July, clouds move through the campground rather than above it, and the forest is spruce and fir rather than the hardwoods of the valleys below. The Mount Pisgah summit trail climbs to a television tower and one of the widest views in the region, taking in the Pisgah Ridge, the Shining Rock Wilderness and, on a clear evening, the lights of Asheville. The Parkway itself is the attraction as much as the campground is: this section runs along the crest with pull-offs every mile or two.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Everything about getting here is Parkway driving: a 45 mph limit, no commercial traffic, tight curves and stone-lined tunnels with posted clearances that will stop a tall build. Know your exact height before you commit to a tunnel, and have an alternate route in mind. The Parkway closes without much notice for ice and fog, and at this elevation that starts in autumn and can last into spring, so check the Park Service's real-time road closure map the morning you travel rather than the night before. There is no fuel anywhere on the Parkway.
Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
