About Caesars Head State Park
The overlook at Caesars Head is one of the great views in the East: the escarpment falls away more than two thousand feet in a single sweep, and on a clear day the Piedmont runs flat to the horizon with Table Rock standing off to the east. In September and October the park becomes a hawk watch, as thousands of broad-winged hawks funnel along the escarpment on migration and volunteers count them from the rock. Raven Cliff Falls, reached by a trail from a separate parking area up the road, drops more than four hundred feet and is among the tallest waterfalls in the state. The park anchors the northern end of Mountain Bridge Wilderness.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
We have not confirmed the overnight options here — the Mountain Bridge area's camping is backcountry and permit-based rather than drive-in — so plan to sleep at Table Rock or in Greenville and visit for the day. Getting up is US 276, a steep, sustained mountain climb with tight switchbacks and a long descent afterwards; use low gear going down rather than the brakes, and take it slowly in a heavy build. Parking at the overlook and at the Raven Cliff trailhead is limited and fills early in autumn.
Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
