About Gorges State Park
Gorges gets somewhere near ninety inches of rain a year, and the landscape shows it. Rivers drop more than a thousand feet in a handful of miles through steep-sided gorges, the forest is dense and dripping, and the rare plant list is long enough that botanists make the trip specially. Rainbow Falls, reached by a trail that starts in the park and continues onto adjoining land, is among the most impressive waterfalls in the state. The terrain is genuinely rugged and the trails reflect it, with sustained climbs and slick rock near the water. Whitewater paddlers know this corner of the Blue Ridge Escarpment well.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
We have not confirmed what overnight options exist here for a vehicle, so check with the park before planning to sleep in the park itself — Brevard is a short drive and the Pisgah campgrounds are nearby. The access road from NC 281 is paved and fine. Take the waterfall trails seriously: wet rock beside falling water causes real accidents here every year, and the park posts warnings for good reason.
Written for a high-roof van, not a pickup. Surfaces and clearances change with the weather and with the season’s roadwork — the official page below is the last word.
