The place
About Oconee State Park
Oconee is a small, unhurried mountain park built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and largely unchanged since: a stone-and-log lodge, a lake with a swimming area and rental rowboats, and cabins set among hardwoods. It is the eastern terminus of the Foothills Trail, which runs seventy-odd miles west along the escarpment to Table Rock and beyond, so it sees a steady trickle of long-distance hikers alongside families who have been coming for generations. Waterfalls in the surrounding Sumter National Forest — Station Cove, Yellow Branch, Issaqueena — are all within a short drive.
For van drivers
Getting a van in and out
Paved access on SC 107 and a developed campground; straightforward for most builds, though the park is old and some internal loops are tight, so a long van should scout before backing in. Walhalla, seven miles down the mountain, is the nearest town for fuel and groceries. SC 107 continues north into the forest and gets steeper and more remote. Cell signal is weak to absent.
